Tough talks as a Dad

Daddy, Am I beautiful?

Immediately as I heard these words I wanted to jump into rescue mode. I wanted to say ALL the words that came to my mind to answer this question with a resounding YES.

However, I was uncertain where this question was coming from. So while I affirmed my daughter with a confident and gentle “Yes, sweety”, I pushed into where this question may have come from.

My daughter began to tell me that she was talking with some girls at school. They were all mentioning what colors they found pretty. When my daughter said she liked the color brown like her skin she was told that is not a pretty color. She then realized that her hair isn’t like the other girls along with other features. So she came home wondering if she was beautiful. She wanted to know if I liked the color brown. If I like her hair. If I like her eyes etc.

As we began to have this crucial conversation I knew I wanted to use more than just my words to reinforce the truth that she was beautiful. That is where this book comes in.

I found this book through some friends who are also reading this to their children. My daughter was able to connect with the young girl’s struggle as well as feel a sense of relief knowing that she was being told about her beauty from another source.

I don’t like these tough talks. I don’t imagine any parent does. Nonetheless, I am humbled that my daughter finds us a safe place to bring such issues. I pray that we can continue to speak life into her.
