How many of you enjoy a good movie? I mean I really love a GOOD movie… One that draws you in the story, makes you love/hate the characters. One in which you feel the tension as if it was taking place in your own home…
Well you know what beats a movies (outside of living the actually drama which probably wouldn’t be as entertaining), a book.
I am serious. For those of you who love to read you can find yourself engaged much deeper than Hollywood would ever take you. For those of you who are like me, reading can sometimes be a chore. (I hated chores when I was younger). However no matter if I dislike reading or not the trurh is there is power/knowledge/excitement/and a wonderful journey waiting as one turns the page.
An example…
I just finished (actually it has been a while… sorry) the book Freeman, the novel by Leonard Pitts, Jr and I must say it was a roller-coaster ride (I hate roller-coaster rides by the way, real ones anyway 🙂.

takes place in the first few months following the Confederate surrender and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Upon learning of Lee’s surrender, Sam–a runaway slave who once worked for the Union Army–decides to leave his safe haven in Philadelphia and set out on foot to return to the war-torn South. What compels him on this almost-suicidal course is the desire to find his wife, the mother of his only child, whom he and their son left behind 15 years earlier on the Mississippi farm to which they all “belonged.” At its core, Freeman is a love story–sweeping, generous, brutal, compassionate, patient–about the feelings people were determined to honor, despite the enormous constraints of the times.
However there is so much depth to this book. You have no choice but to get involved in the characters lives as you eagerly await the outcome of whatever situation they find themselves in. For me, the story was so compelling I found myself reading several chapters, then sharing the story with my wife. After a few readings she begin to ask me what was happening next, or how is a certain character doing. Although she never physically picked up the book, Freeman impacted her life.
Simply, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was hard to pick up and work through, but it was even harder to put down…

Thanks for finishing it. I know if was difficult reading. Wish you were around to discuss. It was one of the most heart-breaking books I’ve ever read, and I took a class on the Holocaust in college and have been a student of that time period and the Jewish people most of my life. Freeman was incredible. I still find myself thinking about it, and grieving over it.
Freeman was a great read. The reality of what happen is a story I have grown up with and heard about for years. Thank you for sharing that book with me.
